NL |De Voedselwerkplaats – supporting food communities

ENG | Promoting core competencies – developing sustainable, healthy communities
Two project examples with focus on food from the region Vileyka and Krasnopolie, Belarus
By: Siarhei Tarasiuk, Director of IFRD and Tatjana Titulenko, Chairperson of ZOVIK
In the presentation the participants will get a short overview of two actual projects from the NGO´s IFRD and ZOVIK
1. ZOVIK supports local inhabitants from small villages so that they become capable to produce healthy food for their own needs as well as for selling their own products at local markets. In this presentation ZOVIK presents their actual project, a local goat farm.
2. The IFRD – International Foundation for Rural Development  mission is to promote sustainable development of rural areas. In the presented case local inhabitants from Gory (Krasnopolie) have  established a cooperative for producing soft cheese. They are now trying to buy an old unused building in the village for reconstruction and the creation of local cheese centre.
——————————————–
“The local people in both areas, who are taking part in the projects, are very energetic and creative to make their projects a success. In both areas the focus is to involve people from different ages and different backgrounds as well as people with chronic diseases etc. If the skills of the involved people are seen and fostered, the projects have success. And it is a pleasure to see the people, how they work together and how motivated they are. We can learn a lot from them! “ (quote from Iris)

ENG |Cape Town’s Food Systems between water stress and COVID-19
By: Nicole Paganini (researcher), Nomonde Buthelezi (urban farmer and community organizer, Cape Town), Silke Stöber (researcher), Centre for Rural Development (SLE), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Black Urban Farmer Forum Cape Town
Lessons learned from the townships. The COVID-19 pandemic aggravated the food security status in Cape Town’s townships. In a community research project, urban farmers identified solutions to combat increasing hunger. They started to grow seedlings in community nurseries and share them with backyard growers. The project provides insights from a deeply marginalized society in poor neighborhoods, by shedding light on food injustice patterns on the one hand, but also, by showing community-driven solutions that improve a broken food system on a local scale. We discuss with practitioners from the Black Urban Farmer Forum in Cape Town how community research could support in building back better.

Workshop structure:
1. Welcome from and to Cape Town
2. Video: Who controls the food systems?
3. Food justice and food mapping
4. Community solutions
5. Q&A, discussion, networking

ENG | Bringing the neighborhood together with the SOS Children’s Village: Food projects for residents in Garath, Düsseldorf
By: Sabine Kopka, bereichsleiding offene Stadtteilarbeit
In the Garath district in the south of Düsseldorf, a new, ecologically-based SOS Children’s Village is being built. Many low-income families live in Garath and the level of unemployment is very high. The shopping center and the high street are characterized by a high vacancy rate. The local authority and civil society are working hard to redesign them. The SOS Children’s Village is contributing by transforming a small shopping center into a large social center for all citizens: an urban SOS Children’s Village with an intergenerational community center (“Mehrgenerationenhaus”). Nutrition plays an important role in this. The projects are Ecological, accessible/“niedrigschwellig”, sustainable and intergenerational.

The projects cover gardening, growing and harvesting vegetables, learning about (organic and healthy) food, help with purchasing, preparing food and using food leftovers.
Examples from: the day-care center, community centers for children, the communal kitchen, projects in the intergenerational center, the new drop-in family cooking workshop as a cross-city project with day-care centers, schools and neighborhood residents.
